Zusammenfassung |
The Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) design and organization was finalized at the Working Group on Coupled Models (WGCM) 18th Session that was held 8-10 October 2014. In a significant innovation relative to CMIP5, this phase of the model intercomparison will be organised through a set of endorsed Model Intercomarison Projects, each with their own scientific objectives and coordination. This approach will allow the CMIP6 archive to expand into some significant new scientific areas without overloading the central coordination. The process of formulating the data request, which will ensure that consistent and complementary data is archived from all endorsed MIPs, will be completed in mid 2015.
This presentation will review the status of planning for CMIP6 and the challenges associated with the new approach. At the same time it is necessary to address a number of problems which inconvenienced users of the CMIP5 archive. The difficulties of providing robust data access services for a globally distributed archive run through informal cooperation of a large number of independent institutions will be discussed.
The status of the CMIP6 variable request will be reviewed, providing information on the new variables requested and expected archive volumes. |
