Zusammenfassung
The temporal relationship between the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and precipitation in the west regions of Iran is explored through the use of Multichannel Singular Spectrum Analysis (MSSA), using monthly and seasonal precipitation data (in the form of standard precipitation index, SPI) and PDO from 1957 to 2008. Three SPI time aggregations: annual (from October to September), cold (from October to April) and warm (from May to September) seasons were chosen. To assess spatial and temporal patterns of droughts, a principal component analysis (PCA) and Multichannel Singular Spectrum Analysis (MSSA) were applied to the SPI series, based on the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) in the region. In this way, four different and spatially well-defined regions with different temporal evolutions of droughts were identified. MSSA shows significant 4, 3 and 7-year cycles in the SPI-PDO patterns for annual and cold season time series in the west of Iran. The observation of dry periods supports the occurrence of more frequent cycles of dry events towards the end of time series, which suggests a much stronger immediate influence of the PDO in recent years than before in west Iran.
