After “participatory monitoring”
In the recreational area of Loosdrecht, in the Western part of the Netherlands, worried citizens were involved in the monitoring of the water levels. Models were developed, based on their data and the data obtained by the water board. The data and model results were jointly (by stakeholders, waterboard staff and researchers) compared and discussed. This yielded more understanding of the natural system and also growth in mutual trust. That was the situation right after the participatory monitoring campaign. But what happened with the trust after one year of less interaction, and how did the experiences with participatory monitoring in other parts of the country relate to those in Loosdrecht and what are the lessons that can be drawn for the involvement of stakeholders in monitoring campaigns and for stakeholder participation in general? |
