Zusammenfassung
The book GEOHERITAGE IN EUROPE AND ITS CONSERVATION presents an overview of geoconservation in Europe, and includes contributions from 37 countries. It is the first time such an overview is published. The book is produced by ProGEO, the European Association for the Conservation of the Geological Heritage, that works to promote the conservation of Europe’s rich heritage of landscapes, rocks, fossils and mineral sites in Europe, exchanging ideas and information in an open forum, while taking part in geoconservation in a global setting, including the formulation of conventions and legislation. The poster gives examples of the content of the book. The European countries are diverse with respect to geology and landscape, culture and history. Geoconservation strategies, practices and legislation therefore vary from country to country, but there also is a mutual basis for geoconservation throughout the continent. Each chapter then describes the management practices for geodiversity and geological heritage per country. Additionally, critical comments on lack of management can to be found. And each chapter concludes with challenges for geoconservation. The idea of making such a book dates from the early years of ProGEO, the early 1990s. Gerard Gonggrijp from The Netherlands forwarded the idea for such a book as a tool to meet the ProGEO aims of sharing information and create inspiration for geoconservation. The book can be ordered through the ProGEO website: www.progeo.se. On this website updates and supplementary information on the geoconservation situation per country will be made available in future.
