Zusammenfassung
The last interglacial period (the Eemian, LIG) 130 to 115 kyears before present has been recognized as a very interesting climatic period because the climate in general was warmer than our present and thus to some extent an analog to a future warmer world. The onset, characteristics and end of the Eemian climate period is discussed based on available palaeodata with a strong emphasis on ice core data. In addition models will be included especially to highlight the expected differences between the present interglacial, the last 11.7 kyears and the Eemian and in this framework discuss to which extend we can use the Eemian period as an analog for a future warmer World. Information on the contribution to the global sea level rise during the LIG of the big ice sheets will be discussed and will show that both big ice sheets must have contributed significantly to the observed Eemian sea level rise of 4-8 m.
