Zusammenfassung |
Optical observations from commercial aircraft flying at altitudes of around 10 km ASL during sunset show that at certain circumstances a green band is visible near the horizon. The band is perpendicular to the horizon and extends 1-2 degrees vertically and several tens of degrees horizontally. The band is visible shortly after sunset, at solar zenith angles slightly above 90 degrees. The band is apparent in the analysis of several images taken with digital cameras at the above conditions during flights at different dates. The band appears situated slightly above the usual orange/red sunset colors and can be also seen with the naked eye. Analysis of the digital RGB images show that within this band, the intensity of green light is higher than the ones of red light and blue light.
Radiation transfer model simulations for an observer flying at 10 km ASL and a solar zenith angle of 92 degrees confirm the above observations as well as that the viewing angle of the band from the observer is around 89-91 deg. |
