Zusammenfassung |
In this work we present a reconstruction of mass balance of Ariebreen back to 1983, basing
on meteorological data collected at Polish Polar Station Hornsund. Hornsund fiord, located in
the southern part of Svalbard has warmer and more humid climate than the other parts of
Spitsbergen island, making it very sensible to climate change. Most of the glaciers in this area
are currently retreating, following the warming of the climate after the end of Little Ice Age,
In Hornsund region there is a lack of long-term mass balance data in 1980s, as continuous
measurements on Hansbreen date back only to 1989 and there is no other site for
comparison.
Fully distributed temperature index model - positive degree day model including potential
direct radiation was applied to reconstruct the mass balance of Ariebreen in years 1983-2008.
The spatial distribution of solid precipitation is assumed to be constant in time and is
parametrized by an index map derived from interpolated snow cover thickness measurements.
This accounts for wind redeposition of snow, improving significantly model performance for
accumulation season. |
