| Measurements from the High Resolution Dynamics Limb Sounder on NASA's Aura satellite are used to study gravity wave momentum fluxes over eight monsoon regions and over the years 2005-2007. Results are compared to outgoing long wave radiation (as a proxy for deep convection) and tropical rainfall data from the TRMM mission. A good correlation between the HIRDLS momentum flux and both the OLR and TRMM time series is observed in seven of the eight regions studied, with around half of annual momentum fluxes observed during the monsoon season. |
