Zusammenfassung
Within the framework of the French margins project “Actions Marges”, the Western Mediterranean is a site of focus for studying the new paradigms in the formation of deep-water rifted margins and margin inversion. A large amount of seismic reflection profiles and drilling data have been collected in the Western Mediterranean over the years and have helped strongly to advance the understanding of the deep structure and sedimentary sequences of margins. Seismic data and well logs are, however, often (co)owned by the industry and it is not always easy to know which surveys have been carried out and which data are available. In order to make these key geophysical data more accessible for scientific research, we started the inventory of industrial and academic geophysical data collected over time in a GIS database (MEDGEOGIS). The objective is to have a complete overview (in metadata) of all seismic cruises and wells, and to have a maximum of data, cruise reports and other documents that allows a throughout evaluation of the existing seismic and drilling data sites in the Western Mediterranean. We aim to harmonize our data and metadata formats to other geophysical data base initiatives in Mediterranean countries (e.g., Videpi in Italy, CSIS in Spain), on a European level (e.g., SeaDataNet, GeoSeas) and internationally (e.g. MGDS). The MEDGEOGIS data base will be made accessible for most of its content through a simple and user-friendly online application.
