Zusammenfassung
The zonal asymmetry in the distributions of long-lived tracers is investigated using methane (CH4) and hydrogen fluoride (HF) in the tropical mid-stratosphere during January through March. During the easterly phase both zonal wind and tracer mixing ratio show small perturbations in the zonal direction. During the westerly phase the CH4 and HF distributions exhibit large zonal asymmetry at 10°N but small asymmetry at the equator, although the zonal wind patterns are similar at both latitudes. To understand the above differences between at the two latitudes the perturbation tracer continuity equation is used to derive a simple relationship between the meridional divergent forcing and the response in the tracer distribution. The derived relationship shows that the meridional gradients of mixing ratio and zonal wind play significant roles in determining the zonal asymmetry in the tracer distribution. Mixing ratios of CH4 and HF in 1997 and 1998 are used to prove the validity of the above relationship quantitatively.
