Zusammenfassung
Propagation of interplanetary (IP) shocks through the interplanetary space, their modification in the foreshock, and interaction with the bow shock and magnetopause are key problems of the Space Weather Program because they are often connected with strong geomagnetic disturbances. The situation with several monitors (ACE, Wind, SOHO, and one THEMIS probe) and a number of spacecraft (THEMIS, Cluster, Geotail, GOES) orbiting in the different magnetospheric regions allows us to trace the original shock and induced discontinuities through them. The main goal of the present study is to analyze the propagation of shocks through the solar wind and their transformation to geomagnetic disturbances. Moreover, IP shocks are often accompanied with a rotation of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) over a large angle and this rotation modifies the interaction process. The study analyzes several shocks followed by IMF rotations with motivation to separate their effects. The interaction region by simultaneous spacecraft observations can be covered only sporadically, however, global MHD modeling can help in our understanding of these processes.
