Zusammenfassung
The traditional ways of scholarly publishing and peer-review do not live up to the needs of efficient communication and quality assurance in today’s rapidly developing and highly diverse world of science. Substantial improvement can be achieved by an open access two-stage publication process with interactive peer-review and public discussion. It enables rapid publication and dissemination of new results in discussion papers followed by thorough and transparent peer-review which is open for input from the scientific community (permanently archived and fully citable), and it leads to final revised papers with maximum quality assurance and information density. This approach has been successfully realized and applied in a series of interactive open access journals launched and operated by EGU and the professional publisher Copernicus since 2001. The aims, achievements and perspectives of the EGU interactive open access journals and the perspectives of interactive open access publishing and public peer-review will be outlined and discussed.
