| To understand the geological sources of magnetic anomalies two petrophysical mapping programmes were carried out in Finland. The first provided more than 100 000 samples of bulk density, magnetic susceptibility and intensity of remanence. In the other c. 6000 minidrill samples were analyzed by direction of remanent magnetization in addition to the previous. Finally, to tie the measurement with the geological history of the crystalline basement
c. 600 geochronogical type samples were studied petrophysically. The results show time dependent and regional variation in magnetic sources and suggests that an essential part of the regional anomalies are caused by unknown sources at depth. The direction of remanent magnetization different to the present field may explain some regional anomalies. |
