This talk presents the progress and recent history of Grid computing in Europe which has led to the creation of the European Grid Initiative (EGI). EGI builds on the work of the Enabling Grids for E-sciencE (EGEE) project bringing together European national grid infrastructures to establish a multi-science Grid infrastructure for the European Research Area, and connect to other regions through collaborating infrastructures around the world. The existing use of European grids by the geosciences community and avenues for future exploitation will be explored. By considering these developments, this talk will suggest some guidelines for the geosciences community to make optimal use of such e-Infrastructures and position itself with respect to future developments. |
