| The Institute of Archaeological and Monumental Heritage (IBAM CNR) has been put in charge of an integrated prospecting on the ancient walls of Gallipoli (Apulia, Southern Italy) by the local Municipality. This survey was undertaken in order to support the restoration works of these walls that are both an important retaining structure for the superposed road and an historical monument. Therefore, high resolution 3D GPR surveys both on the superposed road and on the ancient walls were performed. Furthermore, a seismic investigation was performed too. The GPR prospecting has allowed to identify several inhomogenities embedded in the wall (especially cavities) whereas the seismic investigation has allowed to characterize the local geological stratigraphy, with particular attention devoted to the relationship between the ancient masonry and the bedrock. |
