Zusammenfassung
We use an atmospheric chemistry-climate model to investigate the impact of a 10% reduction of the solar irradiance on the earth’s atmosphere. Starting from the significant reduction in global-mean surface temperature modelled, which is envisaged as a possible mitigation of “global warming”, we study changes in stratospheric ozone and concurrent alterations in forced atmospheric variability. In the global mean, ozone above 17km increases and temperatures decreases throughout the atmosphere. In the modelled geoengineered climate ENSO related teleconnection patterns change in the northern polar stratosphere. The observed and modelled polar centre of action at 50hPa disappears in the run with reduced solar irradiance. Evidence exists for stratospheric disturbances influencing tropospheric weather regimes. Consequently changing stratospheric teleconnection patterns will almost certainly have some repercussion for tropospheric weather. In addition we conclude that consequences of geoengineering proposals should not be assessed with too simple a model, or important environmental changes and their feedbacks might be missed. In our example a significant change in forced atmospheric ENSO variability.
