Zusammenfassung
Under anticyclonic or weak pressure gradient conditions, locally generated circulations can become predominant. In complex terrain, the topography conditions largely the structure of the low level flows. At nightime, the differencial surface radiative cooling determines the distribution of colder and warmer areas and is a primary cause of generation of basin-scale flows. Katabatic flows are formed on the mountain slopes and on the gentle basin slopes converging to the center of the basin. Cold pools can form at low spots, being the largest usually at the bottom of the valley. In this study, a high-resolution mesoscale simulation combined with the use of Meteosat satellite images allows to inspect the formation and time evolution of the drainage flows and the cold pool and their interaction. Turbulence in the area is mainly generated by the drainage flows in a sporadic or intermittent manner, and transport between the nocturnal boundary layer and the free atmosphere takes place accordingly. This transport is estimated using passive scalars as tracers to qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate it.
